Christian Science - Doctrine of Scripture & GOD

1a. The Authority of the Scriptures

1b. Stated: She claimed that the Bible was the only authority of faith

2b. Practiced: She did not consider the Scriptures sole authority

1c. She discredited the Scriptures

Referring to Genesis 2:7: “Is this addition to His creation real or unreal? Is it the truth? Or is it a lie, concerning man and God? It must be the latter…” (Science and Health, pg. 517)

“….the manifest mistakes in the ancient versions: the thirty thousand different reading of the Old Testament, and the three hundred thousand in the New – these facts show how a mortal and material sense stole into the divine record, darkening. To some extent the inspired pages with its own hue” (Science and Health, pg. 33)

2c. She spiritualized the Scriptures: to make it say what she wanted it too

2a. The Authority of her writings: Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures

1b. Stated

1c. Mrs. Eddy was inspired of God to write Science and Health with key to the Scriptures

1d. She is the woman in Rev. 12:13

Rev 12:13, “When the dragon saw that he had been hurled to the earth, he pursued the woman who had given birth to the male child.” (NIV)

2d. Her writing are on a level equal to the Scriptures

2c. Mrs. Eddy’s work is the only correct interpretation of the Scriptures: the

Bible speaks otherwise

John 14:26, “But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.” (NIV)

1 Cor 2:13, “This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, expressing spiritual truths in spiritual words.” (NIV)

I Jn 2:20-21, “But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and all of you know the truth. I do not write to you because you do not know the truth, but because you do know it and because no lie comes from the truth.” (NIV)

I Jn 2:27, “As for you, the anointing you received from him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about all things and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit-- just as it has taught you, remain in him.” (NIV)

2b. Analyzed

1c. This work is substandard writing

1d. Mrs. Eddy was very poorly educated and this reflects in her work

2d. Many revisions have been necessary to correct mistakes as well as grammatical errors, rambling sentences, no logical sequences, unintelligible statements

2c. This work is a plagiarism

1d. Mrs. Eddy claimed it was an original work, much was that of P. P. Quimby and a manuscript entitled “The Metaphysical Religion of Hegel”

2d. 1895, she gave an annual message in Christ Science Church which was almost a word for word copy of a sermon given in Murray’s Reader

1a. The Essence of God

1b. God is not a personality – man can not conceive of such a concept

2b. God is an impersonal force

1c. God is not a thinking personality but is simply a force which makes up all things

2c. God is a principle, life, intelligence, spirit, substance, and mother god

2a. The Trinity of God: consists of life, truth, and love.

1b. The doctrine of the trinity is false for it presents a polytheistic and heathenistic view of God

2b. The true trinity consists of “life, truth, and love” which are actually God

3a. The Son of God

1b. His Deity: Jesus was not God but only possessed God’s essence

1c. Eddy writes that “Jesus Christ is not God as Jesus Himself, but is the son of God”

2c. There is a distinction between the personal Jesus who is mortal and theimpersonal Christ who is divine idea – (how contrary to Phil. 2:6-8)

2b. His Conception: Mary did not conceive a child through God but conceived an idea about God, which she named Jesus.

1c. Mary conceived a spiritual idea of God and gave to her idea the name Jesus

2c. “Jesus was the offspring of Mary’s self-conscious communion with God”

3b. His Death

1c. The shedding of Christ’s blood did not atone for sins, nor could blood ever be able to pay for sins

1d. Sin is only an illusion: sin does not really exist therefore man does not need to be rescued from it

2d. “The material blood of Jesus was no more efficacious to cleanse from sin when it was shed upon the accursed tree than when it was flowing in his veins” (Science and Health, pg. 330)

2c. Christ’s crucifixion was efficacious only in the sense that it demonstrates true affection and goodness or in other words, “God” – Christ thus died for “the terrible unreality of a supposed existence a part form God”. (in other words it was a waste of time for there was no separation between God and man)

3c. Jesus did not really die on the cross for death is only an illusion as well

4b. His Resurrection (see 1 Cor. 15:16-22)

1c. The resurrection of Christ was a spiritual one, not a physical

2c. In John 20 and Acts 1, Jesus took on a temporary body to accommodate Himself to the disciples’ immature ideas of Spiritual power (S & H pg. 339)

“Jesus students…did not perform any wonderful works until they saw him after the crucifixion and learned he had not truly died.” (S & H pg. 350-351)

5b. His Ascension: Jesus merely moved from the physical realm to the spiritual realm

“. . . (the disciples’) . . . dear Master would rise again in the spiritual scale of existence and fly beyond their apprehension . . . He would disappear to material sense, in that change which has since been called the ascension” (Science and Health, page 339)

6b. His Ministry

1c. Christ came to show people that evil, sickness, etc. were only illusions of the mind

2c. Christ healed people by getting them to see their problems as illusions and then overcoming them – not real miracles but mind over matter

4a. The Holy Spirit: he is the true science, the “divine science” that is being practiced

1b. Comforter (John 16:7-8)

2b. Teaches (Lk. 12:12)

3b. Speaks (Acts 13:2)

4b. Thinks and decides (Acts 15:28)

5b. Lied to (Acts 5:3)

6b. Grieved to (Eph. 4:30)
