Hobby Evangelism

Can a Hobby be used to Witness?

1 Corinthians 10:31-32, "Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God." NKJV

This verse is well known by most Christians however I questions whether they have a complete understanding as to its total impact. It you were to ask the average believer what this verse means they will probably tell you it that applies to matters such as one's service, one's witness, one's employment, one's church attendance, and etc. Though these things are clearly covered by this verse, they fall short of the full intent of the Holy Spirit's declaration "do all to the glory of God."

Every aspect of our lives should be lived or practiced in a way that glorifies God and "all" includes our personal interests and hobbies. When was the last time you heard of someone speaking of Hobby Evangelism? I think most believers have not considered their interests and hobbies as a tool to reaching others for Christ. Are you into quilting? How can use that glorify God? Are you a sports fan? How can you use that to glorify God? Are you into cooking? How can you use that to glorify God?

Whatever we enjoy doing has the capacity to be used of God to touch the lives of others. Let me illustrate this point from personal experience. My interest is Model Railroading. In the fall 2010 I began looking for a way to reach out and connect with the community I minister in. Seeking God's leading, I sensed He wanted me to use my interest in Model Trains to accomplish that very task. Since the community had an annual "Rail Fest" celebrating its historical Rail Road roots I contcated the individual in charge. I asked him if he would be interested in me opening my trains to the public. Since there are few in the community that are interested in this hobby and none willing to show what they have done he was delighted to have me get involved.

The local newspaper did a two page color spread on my layout (see below). The Historical Society did an article and later it was featured in All Aboard, the magizine the Railroad Evangelistic ministry. With tracts ready and plenty of Church brochures and business careds avaiable, I spent two days meeting new people and dispensing lots of materials. Since that time God has continued to open up other opportunities through my hobby to meet others and even to share the gospel.

If you have never thought of your hobby or interests as a means for glorifying God I would encourage you to do so. To give you an idea of what I am talking check out the following articles. Click on the picture for a PDF readable form.
